Back then
When the nets were all filled
How lavish it was
To choose what you wanted
Anymore
The fishing nets
May still be full
But there is nothing inside
Save those restless, glittering fragments
From now on
Will we ever have the
Crystal clear ocean
To choose?

Memories of the Ocean / Sustainability & Environmental Education/ Special Exhibition
In his labor of gathering objects along Taiwan’s Pacific Coast, Rahic Talif created a new understanding of the wisdom of his own culture and reflected on relations among people and land, environment and ecology, responsibility and ethics. He works to transcend ways of thinking grounded in binary oppositions, observing the world with a calm and open-mindedness. His vision encompasses past and present, tradition and modernity. In his work with found objects, he employs waste gathered along the beach such as driftwood, pieces of plastic, and sea glass in ways that reveal the essence of these materials. Through this process, the works cause viewers to observe something of their own reality: these pieces cause us to confront the reality of the environment that we face today.
