The Marine Museum of Art / Indifference
From Marine Debris to the Marine Museum of Art
The Marine Museum of Art / Indifference
From Marine Debris to the Marine Museum of Art
In The Marine Museum of Art / Indifference Rahic Talif attempts to reflect both the synchronicity maritime culture and its presence, that it is always at hand to us in our practices of world building. In this series of works, Rahic amplifies the marine narratives and perceptual forms that he has fashioned, over the last several years, from sea waste materials. Moreover, through the dual reference to art and indifference produced by institutional spaces such as the art museum, his Marine Museum of Art explores how various institutions have frozen the uses and meanings of objects once used by his people. Yet those objects people once used, now looked at from a great distance in museums, still manage to sneak many kinds of everydayness into our lives. These days, people have gradually lost their reverence for the ocean, with its associated taboos and rituals. We no longer have the opportunity to let the ocean take a breath. The things that civilization no longer wants finally flow into the ocean. Dispersing through the sea, they cover the reefs and block the place where life was created, the places to which our hearts were once knit, the places that were the hunting grounds that once fed us. The works in The Marine Museum of Art / Indifference reflect on the essence of various sacred and solemn institutions. They also ask us, “What are the beliefs in people’s hearts? On what do their spirits depend?” Thus they provoke further responses to Rahic’s proposed ways of collecting and observing along the Pacific Coast. They truly bring the variation of the ocean back into our individual lives and collectively realize the way future civilization should manifest itself
