If There Were an Island on the Beach

Dimensions: height 350-380 cm length 1300 cm width 250-300 cm

Islands are born beside the sea. The Kuroshiro Current and other flows connect them, the islands becoming like neurons and the Pacific Ocean a synapse. The ocean forms an integrated body. Our perceptions and thoughts are interconnected in a form that has never been broken. This form, the ocean is like a message through which we bring forth our life. We are fed by the plentiful creatures who inhabit the reefs and rocks of the intertidal zone; here life responds to all the transformations of the environment.

Today, we have gradually lost the taboos and rituals that expressed our reverence for the ocean. We no longer have occasions that let the ocean rest. We have discarded everything our civilization no longer wants into the ocean. In these ways, we have closed off the place from which new life should be created.

The world of which we can have certainty is, in fact, just several strands of turbulence. It is through these currents in their unending cycle that the world’s meaningful signs can intersect and communicate. When their messages come to these reefs and villages beside the ocean, they are like the northerly gales of winter when they disperse the seeds of the seaweeds, which hide until they are needed. The seeds are nourished amidst the waves and grow in strength when the wind rises. They have no fear for hurricanes, but purely respond to natural transformations, becoming a pattern, trend, or model of every kind of life this island has gradually brought forth and nurtured. Perhaps it is not dazzling, but it is pure.
